Monday, January 19th is Martin Luther King Junior Day in the United States. He is remembered on the third Monday every January because his birthday is January 15th, 1929. Reverend Martin Luther King Junior was a man who used kindness and caring to create positive change. Class 3C has been learning about Dr. King in the picture books Martin's Big Words and Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King! Dr. King wanted all people to have justice and freedom no matter what culture or colour of skin. In the 1960's he helped laws to be changed to allow all Americans to sit together on buses, eat together in restaurants and go to school together. Some people thought that African-Americans and white Americans should not be allowed to do these things together. In 1963, Martin Luther King made a very famous speech on his dream for peace and freedom for all people in his country. It was called the "I have a Dream" speech. How is Dr. King a hero who helped make change? What are some examples and ideas from the stories and your own ideas? How did he work together with others to make change?

Jan 19th is Martin Luther King Day and also my mother's birthday, so I now have two powerful role models to celebrate on this special day. Dr. King continues to be a powerful voice of inspiration even after his death almost 40 years ago. how appropriate too, that the day after his holiday in the USA, Barack Obama will be inaugurated as the first black president of the States.

Martin Luther King Junior was important because he changed a country by taking away the signs Whites Only. Rosa Parks was arrested unfairly. The black people would feel bad that if they sit in the front of the bus they would be arrested, too.
Martin Luther King Junior is very important because he made a country different. There were signs saying white only keeping black people not with white people. He helped changed the laws so people could eat, play and learn together. He called black people and white people sisters and brothers. He showed peace and getting along and respect.

Martin Luther King would be very proud today, because of the new president of the United States, but that does not mean there is not lots of work to do to show respect and caring for ALL people of the world.
